Insurance brands are worth $607 billion. Should brokers care?
Every spring a London consultancy tries to put a price on something insurers spend billions building and almost never measure: the name on the policy.
This year’s figure is large. Brand Finance’s Insurance 100 2026, released earlier in the year, values the world’s 100 leading insurance brands at a combined $606.7 billion, up 14% on the year and the sector’s quickest rise in five years. China’s Ping An held the top spot for a tenth straight year, with its brand value rising 19% to about $40 billion.
For American agents and brokers, the more interesting story sits further down the list. Progressive jumped to third place after its brand value rose 79% to $25.4 billion. Brand Finance credited the jump to fast growth in personal lines and much better profitability. Allstate and GEICO both made the global top ten. A published summary of the full ranking puts Allstate fifth at about $19.4 billion, up roughly 22%, and GEICO sixth at about $18.7 billion, up roughly 25%.
US Commercial Construction Growth Slows as A.I. Data Centers Drive Market
Non-residential construction spending is on track to decline in 2026, even as data center investment advances, according to QBE North America and Control Risks, which say A.I.-related infrastructure is both the sector’s biggest growth driver and a concentration risk, reported Risk & Insurance.
The big picture: Data centers now account for more than half of office construction spending. The volume of the investment is propping up non-residential construction volume overall.
By the numbers:
- Spending: Non-residential construction grew nearly 1% in 2025 and is on track to decline in 2026, the first drop since 2010 excluding the Covid-impacted year of 2021.
- Office construction category: Spending grew 12% in 2025 and rose 5.9% in the first six months of 2026.
- Excluding data centers: Spending fell 4.6% in the first half of 2026 vs. the same period in 2025.

Scaling AI in Specialty Insurance: A Conversation with Markel’s Simon Wilson
Simon Wilson is putting AI at the center of how Markel Insurance competes by reimagining entire lines of business rather than optimizing them at the margins. As CEO, he is steering the company’s AI strategy across the organization, guided by a Founder’s Mentality that treats every process as one worth rebuilding from scratch rather than merely improving.
Kyle Kinsell, a partner in our Financial Services and Performance Improvement practices, sat down with Wilson to discuss the future of specialty insurance, how AI is reshaping the economics of underwriting, and why he believes the winners of this shift will be decided in the next 12 to 18 months.
Q: How do you envision AI transforming specialty insurance over the next several years?
Wilson: AI should be viewed in the context of everything else happening in the industry and the wider economy—geopolitical risk, marine war insurance, US casualty, legal-system inflation, changing US Treasury rates. All of it affects the specialty insurance we write around the world. But amid all that noise, I think there’s a danger of missing what is a deeply important technological shift. In my 25-year career, we haven’t seen anything like it. AI represents a fundamental shift in white-collar work, equivalent to what the Industrial Revolution meant for blue-collar activity. Firefighters Install Cameras to Monitor Wildfire Activity Across California
Perched at the front line of California’s fight against wildfires is a 41-year-old named Colby Nicholson and three other roaming MacGyvers in “Alert California” work shirts.
On this warm June morning, they were on a cliff 1,500 feet above the vineyards and small towns of Napa Valley. Several major fires had ripped through this area in the past decade.
Mr. Nicholson and the others peered past the toes of their boots. They pointed toward a winding, dead-end road connecting houses and steep driveways in a scrubby, miles-long chasm called Soda Canyon.
That was the blind spot that local fire officials wanted to see.
“Let’s put it here,” Mr. Nicholson said. By day’s end, there was a 12-foot tripod holding two cameras inside protective globes, powered by solar panels and battery packs. The cameras were connected by satellite Wi-Fi and joined a growing network of nearly 1,300 remote, unblinking eyes on the most fire-prone landscapes of California. STORY
Insurance Pullback Is Coming as Climate Risk Grows, Report Shows -
Insurers are withdrawing coverage for climate-driven risks and increasingly passing on losses to governments and homeowners, according to a report published by UK-based nonprofit Inside Track.
The warning adds to concerns voiced publicly by others in the industry. Last month, Aviva Chief Executive Officer Amanda Blanc said homes being built in the UK today already face uninsurability due to rising flood risks. And Günther Thallinger, a director at Allianz SE, has said that “entire regions” risk becoming uninsurable due to climate change.

39% of drivers use Do Not Disturb While Driving: 2026 DNDWD Survey Results - Cambridge Mobile Telematics
Every text, call, or alert creates the potential to pull a driver’s attention away from the road. For nearly a decade, smartphones have given drivers a simple way to limit those interruptions through Do Not Disturb While Driving (DNDWD).
The DNDWD feature has evolved over the years, from what it’s called to how drivers turn it on. Today, Apple calls it Driving Focus, while Android offers Driving mode. But the purpose remains the same: keeping notifications from competing for a driver’s attention.
National Do Not Disturb While Driving Day on October 15 brings attention to these features and encourages drivers to use them. For the past four years, CMT has marked the day by annually surveying drivers about their use of DNDWD — and what keeps others from turning it on.
